I have been working full-time in mosaic for 10 years in a big tin shed on the land in the bush where I live in putalina/Oyster Cove, in lutruwita/Tasmania.
My work is largely process driven and improvisatory, rarely following any pre-established plan or image. My work is my meditation. I am investing in my pieces the emotional state born as a result of sights, sounds, events; all sensory input. Materials range from the traditionally ancient stone and glass smalti and as well, I find myself inspired by a variety of found material, including traditional materials of marble and smalti (venetian mosaic glass) stone but also and increasingly; any material I come across on my walks and daily life that draws my eye and sings to me with creative possibility, often something that most people probably wouldn’t even look at twice.
My mosaic work focuses on the aspect of the medium I consider to be the most important and specific to its expressiveness; that is, making maximum use of texture and the constantly changing play of light on the mosaic surface, the work in all its dimensions coming to life.
